This logo and logotype were designed for a blues club that was planned to open in Santa Monica, CA. The club was named after Huddie Ledbetter, better known as the legendary "Leadbelly", a famous blues musician. He was a pioneer in the history of American blues music.
The logo needed to be as raw as the blues, so no formal type was used. All type is hand-lettered. A powerful sepia photo of Leadbelly was incorporated with the logotype inside a rustic circle.
A secondary logo came to mind as I created the first Leadbelly's logo. It incorporates the same hand-lettered logotype but this time within a stylized 12-string guitar.
I also had an idea for signage. A huge harmonica sign embedded into the building at an angle
