This Tom Sawyer VHS package was part of a redesign of several old movies distributed by MGM Family Entertainment. This classic Mark Twain story is a great story we all know filled with plenty of adventure.

 

The design of the logo was first on the list. This was one of the few times when a specially designed stock typeface was a perfect fit. The story of Tom whitewashing a fence came to mind and so I searched and found a typeface with wide brushstrokes. All I needed to do then is make them white.

There is never a big budget for updating old movies so my main design tool was layout and retouching. The story surrounds three young friends on and around the Mississippi River. So I used nice scenic vistas in conjunction with large close-ups of the stars.
